Summary:
Tess Gerritsen’s dynamic duo, detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles, return in Ice Cold the eighth installment of the bestselling Rizzoli & Isles series. The novel opens with Isles attending a medical conference in Wyoming, and embarking on an impromptu ski trip with friends. The leisurely outing takes a dangerous turn as their SUV breaks down in the midst of a snow storm, and the group enters the tiny village of Kingdom Come looking for shelter. Isles and friends come upon an unsettling scene; the remote community appears to be hastily abandoned, though there are chilling signs that someone remains, watching. In Boston, a few days later, Rizzoli is notified that Isles’ burned body has been found. This shocking news incites the detective to conduct her own investigation into Kingdom Come, uncovering the village’s malevolent secrets, and learning the truth about Isles’ death. Could this be the end of a beautiful friendship?

Ice Cold is published in the UK under the title The Killing Place. When asked about the differing titles in an interview with International Thriller Writers, Gerritsen cheerfully refused to explain, claiming the answer would be “the biggest spoiler ever!” The author went on to hint: “The solution to the mystery is based on real science and real events that occurred in the American west back in the 1970′s.” She did offer some elucidation on the title. “My two publishers couldn’t agree on which title they liked best, and each decided to go with the one they thought would sell best in their own markets.”

Gerritsen goes on to discuss her characters’ resonance with readers and the upcoming television show based on Rizzoli and Isles. “The book business is so unpredictable that I just have to write the best story I can, release it to the world, and hope it finds its audience. Certainly, when I introduced Jane Rizzoli in my 2001 book The Surgeon, I had no idea she would even survive that story, much less go on to become a popular series character who would end up on television.” The novelist was surprised that theĀ Rizzoli & Isles show actually came to fruition. “It’s all quite astonishing to me, because I’ve had numerous projects either optioned or bought outright for feature film or TV. Nothing ever came of any of it. I assumed that would be the case for this option as well. It just goes to show you that, sometimes, Hollywood doesn’t break a novelist’s heart.”

Rizzoli & Isles premiers July 12, 2010 on TNT.
