Jeffery Deaver Launches Bond Book with Style

Last week, bestselling author Jeffery Deaver celebrated the UK launch of his James Bond title Carte Blanche in a manner fit for 007. USA Today reports that the thriller writer arrived at St. Pancras International train station’s Champagne Bar with a cat-suited “Bond Girl” in tow. While posing with his sexy companion next to a Bentley Continental GT (Bond’s ride in the new book) Deaver received the first copy of Carte Blanche, delivered by a member of the Royal Marines Display Team rappelling from the station ceiling.

Bond fans in the U.S. will have to wait until June 14 to get their hands on the latest adventure. The new book, sort of a series reboot in modern day, features a younger Bond in his thirties, who is an Afghanistan veteran recruited into a black-ops organization known as “Overseas Development Group”. Unfortunately, unlike the posh launch party, the book itself has not made such a splash with critics. “The total lack of suspense is palpable, despite the staccato paragraphing. Still, the last 80 or so pages of Carte Blanche do sputter into a kind of mindlessly diverting life. For example, Bond does something satisfyingly clever with a door,” writes Steven Poole in a review for The Guardian.
