A “Mad Men” Inspired Reading List

mad_men_logoMad Men, the hit show centered around an advertising firm in the 1960′s has inspired more than a love for retro fashion and classic cocktails over lunch. It was also the impetus for the “Mad Men Reading List”, created by Billy Parrott, manager of the Battery Park City branch of the New York Public Library. The list includes all the books read by characters in the series. “I love the show,” says Parrott in an interview with the New York Daily News. “And being a librarian, I always take note when someone’s reading something.” The list, which is featured on the library’s blog as well as on Twitter under the name batteryparkcity, is becoming quite popular with patrons. “Now, the day after the show, people come in and start asking about stuff.”

According to Parrott, the most sought after title is The Group written by Mary McCarthy in 1963, which depicts the lives of eight young women after graduating from Vassar. The book was part of a memorable scene in which character Betty Draper nearly drops it in the bathtub. “That’s one that’s constantly out. I can’t keep it on the shelves,” he explains. The librarian has also began a separate list of books that are not featured on the show, but are titles he feels the fans would enjoy, such as the suburban drama set in the ’60′s Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates.

Parrott imagines that main ad man character Don Draper would be a library patron. “I like to think he might go to the Mid-Manhattan picture collection to find inspiration.”
